Mixed Media Card Journal – Part 1

This video is the first part of my mixed media card journal project.

Inspired by Seth Apter’s tutorial video, Card Play, available from Interweave online store, I have decided to use this project to make myself a mini journal of cards for inspirational quotes and affirmations that I live by.

The beauty of this project is that you can use as many cards as you wish. As Seth suggests in his video, you can use a full 52-card deck and have one card for a project a week; I have decided, however, not to decide just yet as you can add extra cards as you go along.

SUPPLIES USED

  • a set of playing cards
  • black and white gessoes
  • stiff paintbrush
  • a selection of craft paints (I am using the Artiste acrylic craft paints)
  • Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic paint in Titanium white
  • a selection of stamps (clear and handmade foam)
  • a stencil
  • make-up sponges
  • ink pads (I am using Ranger Archival ink pads)
  • bubble wrap
  • heat tool
  • round gelli plate and stamp platform

PROCESS

I started by gessoing some cards, back and forth. I started with white gesso and soon realised that the coverage would not be sufficient so I decided to carry on with my black gesso (I was initially planning to have all my cards black on one side and white on the other).

I then randomly slapped some colour on most of the cards, and kept building some layers by using a variety of paints, inks, stamps, stencils, my gelli plate and marking objects.

But this is only the beginning of the journey these transformed cards are going to take.
Part 2 to come soon…
